Freedom, Free speech, Censorship, Religion and Tight Pants
by Simon inyou would need to be living in a cave to not be aware of the turmoil happening in the world with groups like isis murdering cartoonists over their depiction of their prophet and sides being taken to either attack religion or to defend the right to practise it.. the battle lines appear to be drawn between those who believe in freedom and those who would see it curtailed to be replaced with their own version of what is and isnt acceptable.
most people want freedom and free speech but when choosing it are perhaps unconsciously judging it to only apply to things that they themselves believe in.. we need to be crystal clear what freedom and free speech were really talking about.
freedom itself is usually easier to define as there are some fundamental principles: you should be allowed to do what you want as long as you are not harming others.

I'm sure that deep down most people can agree with you on your basic points about freedom, but it is the nuances that many will have trouble with. -

Not at all. It was just an example of how we can blow things up out of proportion but also how it's something that's perfectly fine for someone to have as a belief just as it is for us not to believe it.
Excuse the misunderstanding. But the blowing out of proportion is a viewpoint issue.
I do agree we are entitled to a belief but we are also not to be sheltered from ridicule from such belief especially when we have become a figure of public attention.

Let me go on the record as saying that I think the whole “Anthony Morris said wearing tight pants is stupid” was overdone. It was a useful vehicle for getting some attention and publicity but got taken a little too far overall and too much was made of it.
Yes I can see how you might view it that way. I on the other hand think that it was good that it got a lot of attention because it shows up how prejudice and biased this guy really is (if he was just a regular person I would agree with you whole heartedly) But since he is a member of the elite GB and claiming to be some sort of F&DS that got knowledge from God well then I feel great let it be know and let it sink into the psyche of all your readers.
But I note your concerns that it not occupy to much space on the board. Attention to different topic varies and our crowd seems to get into it which is very natural when you think about it.

I agree that free speech/writing is very valuable and should not be restricted unless public safety is at stake, but the problem is what constitutes a concern for "public safety"?
Governments have a very complicated problem of making appropriate laws to safe guard that freedom and not react according to bias be it religious or otherwise.
Fairness is so hard to define.

Yes kudos to Simon. He a nice chap that deserve to have his hand shaken. I hope that he continues keeping going, I think he will but I hope it don't take too much of his time to keep it up and running and if it is fun for him to do so, so much the better. -

Is there anything about the JW's you still like?
by donny insome jw's on various postingshave asked me was there anything about the jw's i still agree with.
of course there are some things i agree with and some i partially do.
1. political involvement - while i do not agree with totally avoiding anything associated with politics, i agree that many of todays churches are way too involved in trying to sway their constituents beliefs.

My mind doesn't want to think about things I like or still like, mainly because I'm going through some other break thrus that are using up all my processing power in the frontal lobs.
But I suppose I could come up with something. I like the way they "try" to be nice in order not to make Jehovah sad.

by scary21 inmy ex husband and father of my daughter was never baptized but is still a believer in the wt.. a couple years ago we were talking about evolution ( which he does not believe in ) i brought up the subject of the neanderthals and how we all have their dna except africans ( the ones that never left africa ).
he said neanderthals are apes and not humans and jw's do not teach that they are humans.
i said i believe they do.. in the life- how did it get here book, under the sub heading " the human family "is says " neanderthal man....... was undoubtedly human.. his response was " they are just talking about what other people believe " ahhhhh .

Billy your avatar doesn't look like it has any Neanderthal DNA, but Village Idiot's avatar looks like its got a little more chimpanzee DNA than the general population. 5% well that is probably a good thing that means you got a bigger gene pool and a better chance a survival from diseases and stuff. -

Add all this bad publicity to the fact that the GB just made a huge money grab from all the congregation's savings. This spells some deep trouble for the WT corporation's supply/holdings in the way of brain dead drones who will listen and obey without asking questions.
People can only close their eyes so much to all this I'm sure we are on the cusps of a big exodus from GB slavery.

Well I tend to not be very critical of those that phone the WT corporation for answers, I'm glad people are doing it and hope the trend continues. Those people at bethel that handle the questions and give answers need to be exposed to negative feed back, every little bit helps in my opinion.
Nobody(99%) is perfect in the way we approach this type type of thing but with practice one can hone their skills. It would be nice if the headquarters got bombarded with all kinds of calls with people expressing what ever is on their chest. I hope she keeps up the good work.
